Is anyone else using Plurk? It's similar to Twitter, but there's more smileys involved with a dash of karma too.

I might update this one unlike my very sad and neglected twitter account.

I saw a flyer for this while I was in Chicago. I thought I'd share it here too, since a lot of my f-list is into Polaroids.

OUTDATED
Polaroid art Show

Now seeking original Polaroid film images for upcoming gallery show in Chicago.

DEADLINE
all photographs must be received no later than JULY 25th

There's a $10 submission fee, but you can also use this show to sell your polaroids (or not sell them) and include a S.A.S.E. and they return your photos to you. I'm not sure if I will be participating, but it sounds like it will be amazing. I'm sad that I won't be in Chicago to view it.

more here:
http://polaroidshow.com/
http://www.myspace.com/polaroidshow

This past week has been strange. I've been getting off the high of leaving Chicago. It was a wonderful week even though when I returned to work and people asked me what I did, I didn't really have much to say. We just had fun. Oh yes, we went on a double decker bus tour (thanks leeanne_marie), went to the Sears tower, visited Lincoln Park Zoo and other tourist-y things, but mostly we hung out and enjoyed our vacation time. My sister lives in a really fun neighborhood and there are tons of things to see and do -- mostly restaurants and there's a lot of good people watching to do. Between Dave and I we took over 500 photos, so once I get those sorted, I'll share them here.

This week:
-homemade chocolate soymilk + banana smoothies
-Dave started his new job
-saw Prince Caspian (meh!)
-eye twitching that started on Monday but seems to have disappeared after my dentist appointment on Friday
-Dale and Thomas Country Smokehouse Cheddar popcorn
-getting to sleep early...well, earlier
-hot & humid weather (blah!)
-my new t-shirt from kawaii_not
-my new necklace (which i believe is the next to last one on the right) from Crafters for Critters that I wanted to wear everyday this week, but kept forgetting because I still haven't unpacked my luggage
-walking around aimlessly together after work everyday

[weekend fun]

Last weekend, I hit up Earthfest, went to the beach and then to the MFA for free. It was a pretty great weekend even though I ignored all of my responsibilities like packing for my week in Chicago that starts today. (Click on the photos for more information.)

[into the past]

I know famous people (or at least I like to stand next to them and appear happy).

The Keno Brothers most famous for appearing on Antiques Roadshow. I met them at some small store in Dallas for a book signing. I actually bought two books and had them sign one for the library I was working at. They were very nice, but I was really nervous and they asked me if I liked to go antiquing and I was like, "Sure!" What could I say?

I had the biggest crush on Tavis from Reel Big Fish. I was brokenhearted when I heard he had left the band and I've only seen RBF once without him. It was probably less about him leaving and more about the changing sound of the band.

Tavis again.

...and again. This was the last time I met him. This was at a show at the Avalon (RIP) in Boston that happened in the first couple of months while I was a Freshman at Emerson. I heard about another girl in my dorm that was into ska and I invited her to go with me. That was interesting. We never talked after that except for the occasional hello. Anyways, I swear I'm the reason he left, because we had talked about him going back to college and then suddenly he left the band and according to wikipedia he went back to college. How bizarre! I wonder, I really do.

I have no idea if this hot dog is famous, but my good friend, Geerah, thought it was hilarious. So here it is!

Roger from Less Than Jake. This was totally my punk/ska phase of life. This was taken at the Warped Tour in Dallas. I gave him this short story I wrote about him. Well, one of the characters was inspired by him. I'm embarrassed just thinking about it. Another time that I met him, he asked to see my friend's breasts. How classy!

Look at my black hair! I thought I was the bee's knees, I'm sure. I was really into wearing studded belts and being awesome or so I thought. Anyways, everyone knows The Cat in the Hat, oh yes they do! Actually, this was taken by a boy that I briefly dated and we don't talk anymore and that's kind of sad. He probably hates me! Regardless, this was during first semester of Junior year at Emerson.

The one and only John Dufilho of The Deathray Davies and I Love Math. Dave is friends with him and the first time I clumsily introduced myself like this, sticking out my hand for a handshake and yelling, "I'm Diana and I'm from Dallas." Oh my gosh! So embarrassing. Maybe you just had to be there, but it was kind of sad how nervous I was around him. This meeting was much better and he complimented me on my Polaroid camera. I'm wearing a shirt that my good friend Numidas (lemonediscream) made for me.

The whole reason that Dave and I got together was because of our mutual mucho love of The Deathray Davies. Hooray!

Do the last two pictures actually need an introduction? It's Billy Corgan from Smashing Pumpkins. Although at the time he wasn't in any band. He was in the process of reforming the Pumpkins. I was at the Harvard Book Store waiting in a long line to meet him and have him sign a copy of his poetry book. This would be the third time I was lucky enough to meet him.

These two photos were taken by the nice people that were in front of me in line. Sam was waiting in line with his girlfriend and afterwards, we went to Unos together. I just went to Sam's college graduation party last weekend, so that's what I have to say about meeting people in lines. I tend to meet my friends in the strangest ways.

Last but certainly not least, Rosso from Plastilina Mosh. This elusive band was finally playing a show that wasn't in Mexico and I was lucky enough to see them. If you've seen Y Tu Mama Tambien they are mentioned in the movie and one of their songs is played a couple of times. How did I find out about this obscure band from Mexico? Well, I saw the video for Mr. PMOSH on TV and fell in love. I look totally awkward here and he would have done another photo, but I figured I'd just mess that one up too.

A very cute thing that both of the guys in this band did was stick out their cheek to let you kiss it! I have no idea if this is a cultural thing (must be!), but it was darling.
My little sister is in Paris, France visiting a friend. I thought I would add the France on there considering we used to live in Texas. Anyways, any places she should hit up? I'm guessing she probably already knows what's she doing and she's with a friend that's going to college there, so I'm sure they'll be doing lots of fun things together. Is there anything awesome that I should have her get for me on my behalf?

I probably should have her take a photo or two at the Two Windmills. ;)

[questions]

1. Has anyone had (or is suffering) from Plantar fasciitis? Any recommendations to help deal with the pain?

The pain in my foot started last week and this morning it hurt too much to put any weight on my left foot because of the pain in my heel. I went to a walk-in clinic and this was my diagnosis. I was given special exercises to do, told to take ibuprofen and basically told to come back if it gets worse. I made an appointment with a podiatrist, but it's not for a month. Seriously, I was bound to get this (wearing terrible shoes for all of the walking I do), but did it have to happen right before my trip to Chicago? Ugh.

2. Any recommendations for a college graduation gift? It's for one of our mutual friends. He's not really into drinking or anything. I could do clothes, I suppose, but that requires time. It's for this coming Sunday and I was thinking of just giving cash. Is that too lame? I was thinking Dave could give $25 and I could give $25. And we'll make one of our famous robot cards or well, Dave will because that's not my area of expertise.

Besides both of those things, I got to have an awesome falafel salad at Whole Foods today. It's right by the clinic. & our old apartment. It came with this awesome dill salad dressing and it was the best. Also, ginger snaps for dessert. Yum! Food has a way of making you feel a wee bit better.

P.S. I'm still working on those top 5 lists. I'll post them up before the end of the month. It's taking a little longer because some require photos. :)

I just heard a woman say this outside of the grocery store:

"My kids are so spoiled they get fresh veggies instead of frozen ones."

She said this without an ounce of sarcasm in her voice. I mean, really? Shouldn't everyone be eating fresh veggies? She also said, "They've only eaten things from a can like twice." Is that really a bad thing?

It's official!

Dave and I are going to Chicago together the first week of June. It'll be my third visit and his first and I'm so excited to be there for longer than three days. We're staying with my sister in her apartment and we're saving moneys in order to live it up there for a week. Do you have any recommendations? I know I've asked in the past, but perhaps there are awesome things happening the week of May 31-June 7. I mostly want to hang out and do some tourist-y things, but not really be a tourist. I just want to take it all in and not try too hard.

We're going to try and see a Cubs game, but we'll see what actually happens with that. I want to go to Krispy Kreme, make Dave try White Castle, sandwiches at Jimmy John's, drink tea at Argo Tea and probably find a good local place that has a tasty deep dish pizza. There's also this great Chinese place close to my sister's apartment that is so delicious that we'll have to eat there too. We like to eat! There's much planning in the works. So very exciting, oh yes! Totally can't wait.

P.S. Anyone want to drive us to Sonic? That would be awesome!

P.P.S. I have a sad confession to make and that is I like fast food, but I don't like it all of the time, but there are times that I crave it. I certainly didn't eat it everyday growing up. But there are times when I want fries and nothing but fries will do. I have ventured into the world of making my own "fast food" at home and that's pretty great too. I do miss myself some Chik-Fil-A though, so thank god for MorningStar Farms chik'n nuggets!

Another year, another change jar. This year I found $5.23 (less than last year). I thought it would have been less than that, because it didn't seem like I was finding very much lately. Last summer, I found a ton walking past the Burger King drive-thru on my way to work. I found a lot of silver change that way. Unfortunately, I can't take the short cut anymore, since they put up a fence, so I've only been spotting pennies here and there. Boo!

& now it finds a new home in my piggy bank and to start all over again.

Monday night I went to the information seminar to learn more about teaching English overseas. It was at Suffolk University and the address was wrong on the website. So, I got lost and ran into a bunch of other lost people and finally we figured out we were in the wrong building! We were barely late, but somehow I felt like I missed something, and I wonder how the people that wandered in after us felt. (The lateness was on top of my supervisor giving me the run around about leaving a half an hour early to make sure I could make it. I was pissed off, because I came in early to make up for it and I stayed late last Thursday when I was sick. I don't owe her any favors and I certainly don't ask to be let out early everyday!)

Anyways, I was turned off by the overall business-y attitude the woman had about the whole thing. I wouldn't be in this to make money, but she was someone that was doing this for a living and in her own words, "I'm a single woman that enjoys being single..." which kind of turned me off too. There was an overly ambitious middle-aged woman that wouldn't stop asking questions and she was getting on my nerves and it was awkward sitting in this classroom with all of these people and feeling like the odd one out. Although, I know I wasn't the only one because the woman giving the seminar kept talking about how Americans are in need and that American English is the language of business. And the woman next to me was from Brazil and I knew she felt like she wouldn't be able to do the courses, but her English was perfect! Basically, the seminar was about taking courses that prepare you to teach English overseas, you even make your own lesson plan and teach a day in class. Once you have a certificate, you can take an add-on course that specializes in either Business, Grammar, TESOL or Children, but by no means is that a requirement. They have a placement program and they work with schools/businesses all around the world. It sounds like these teachers are really in need or at least that's what she led me to understand. I wish going to Japan wasn't so trendy, because I feel like that's where I'd love to go. I'd be familiar with the culture, but that is certainly not a requirement. In fact, it seems to be frowned upon if you are proficient in the language of the country of where you'll be teaching, because if you use it in the classroom your students will never learn English.

It sounds like a great opportunity but possibly not something for me. I really wanted to be into this and it could have just been the woman giving the information. She told us a lot about her teaching experiences -- Germany, Czech Republic, Finland and even France -- but I always felt like her business-y approach was going over my head. She was friendly though, so *shrug*, maybe I'm just weird. I really need to research more to figure out if it's something I want do in the future.

I've been oohing and aahing over some things on the web lately. In fact, when am I not doing that? I found this awesome jewelry maker on Etsy that uses beads to put binary messages in her necklaces. I've also been eyeing something on MyPaperCrane, but I'm not going to say what it is because you'll just go buy it right up because of it's sheer cuteness! And there was this great sale on Threadless and Dave and I each got a shirt. I got him this one and I got myself this one. I'm eyeing these two shirts though -- one & two. I'm wondering if I should have my sister go down to the Threadless store and pick them up for us.

All of those things have been open in tabs on my browser for the last week. I just couldn't bare to part with them. Sometimes I have such guilt about buying things, which is why I couldn't spend $150 on a Blythe. I did treat myself after I lost that doll though. I bought this necklace and this ring. Both things remind me of theexits. It was just a coincidence that I fell for that necklace (justbepatient makes lovely things!) and Jane linked to that etsy shop a few entries ago and I've been eyeing a similar ring that was out of my price range. It's still beautiful though and one day I'll splurge and get one.

Some other fun things:
-Heidi's mug collection and Jeu de Paume books
-this amusing video, probably nsfw

Also, do you listen to Pandora Radio? I rediscovered it and my station is oh so amazing and amusing to me. I have weird tastes. I'm still tweaking it though.

I think I'm going to go to this Teach English Overseas seminar on Monday. I'm a little scared to go, but I'm not signing up for anything yet. It's something I've been interested in for a long time, but the idea of being so far away from everyone (not that I wouldn't have relatives if I taught in Japan) makes me nervous. It's probably the reason I've been avoiding getting more information about it. But, I suppose I should worry about those kinds of things after the fact.

What a crappy day. It was so crappy in fact that when I got on the bus the bus driver said to me, "One of those days, huh?" It was one of those days.

I woke up this morning with a stomach ache and a sore throat. I was also incredibly thirsty! So, I drank some iced tea hoping that would rid me of the sore throat, but no, as the day wore on, my throat got worse. I drank two cups of green tea and tons of water at work, but nothing seemed to work. It got duller at points, but it's still there being all sore and stuff. I wanted to leave early thinking that the workload was light, but at about 5pm (when I normally go on break), I was asked if I could stay late! I went on my break and I couldn't even eat anything. By this point, I could barely talk and was just in a foul mood. I stayed late, decided that I had to treat myself but couldn't find what I was looking for at Store-24, but decided to give it one more shot at the gas station convenience store I always pass but never go inside. I lucked out and found a Sunkist Float that I've been thinking about for weeks. It didn't help my throat, but I left the store in high spirits.

& now I still feel bad, but this made me fangirl squeal with glee. Are any of you reading Ryan Adam's blog? It's hilarious and honest and bizarre. This is probably one of my most favorite entries so far:

“TWO SONGS on tape today. I mean, not on tape, i work at home and record onto my little robotic recording machine. But not one, TWO. already. ooooh i love them they are sweet and gentle. with funky laid back hip hop beats. but no electric anything but bass.
the first one is called ‘Allumette Alemagne” and the second one “Disappearing Act.” I would sample them for you but J would do a frontside grind on my face.
XX more later, Foggy, my invisible electric diary machine.
oh by the way, from now on I am going to talk to my blog like it was a spider-plant. It’s pretend house plant name is “Foggy”
Do you name your house plants? I sure do.”

http://dradamsfilms.com/post/30696760

I totally name my house plants! Oh, I feel like we'd be awesome friends!

[do you know what's happening with your LJ?]

This was taken from randomposting.

I'm probably going to be a part of this by default since I don't update as much as I'd like to, but the general idea is that you stay away from LJ for 24 hours. That means not logging into the site or reading your f-list. You can learn more by reading the comments in this entry over at randomposting's journal. Even if you feel like you don't want to participate, you can cut & paste this in your journal to get the word out. Thank you! Or you don't have to do anything at all.

Content Strike Friday March 21, from midnight to midnight GMT

We are holding the Content Strike because we want to demonstrate that LiveJournal is content-driven.

We are holding the Content Strike because we want the new owners of LiveJournal to better understand the power and resolve of the LJ Community of Users.

We are holding the Content Strike because all of us, Paid, Permanent and Plus users as well as Basic, want to demonstrate our solidarity as a Community of Users. We do not consider Basic users to be freeloaders, we consider them to be valuable content-providers and Friends.

We are holding the Content Strike because we ache to do something to show our displeasure, and commenting on the news post -- even with cat macros -- just isn't powerful enough!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The strike has four terms:

Restore basic accounts for new account creation.

Inform users before any change to the site that affects how we use the site or demands on our resources.

Run change proposals by the Advisory Board and take their advice into account before implementation of any change.

NOTE: I'm aware that there may be good business decisions for eliminating Basic accounts. If Basic accounts are to be eliminated, though, that action should be taken only after approval of the Advisory Board and consultation with the LJ Community of Users.

***

The 24-hour strike will begin at the following times for the following locations:

Thursday, March 20, 2:00 PM -- Honolulu
Thursday, March 20, 4:00 PM -- Anchorage
Thursday, March 20, 5:00 PM -- San Francisco; Los Angeles
Thursday, March 20, 6:00 PM -- Mexico City; Denver
Thursday, March 20, 7:00 PM -- Chicago
Thursday, March 20, 8:00 PM -- Montreal; New York
Thursday, March 20, 9:00 PM -- Buenos Aires
Midnight -- London
Friday, March 21, 1:00 AM -- Paris
Friday, March 21, 2:00 AM -- Istanbul
Friday, March 21, 3:00 AM -- Moscow
Friday, March 21, 4:00 AM -- Dubai
Friday, March 21, 5:00 AM -- Islamabad
Friday, March 21, 6:00 AM -- Bangladesh
Friday, March 21, 7:00 AM -- Bangkok
Friday, March 21, 8:00 AM -- Singapore
Friday, March 21, 9:00 AM -- Tokyo
Friday, March 21, 10:00 AM -- Brisbane
Friday, March 21, 11:00 AM -- Sydney
Friday, March 21, 12 Noon -- Suva

***

The one-day content strike is on for this Friday, March 21, from midnight GMT to midnight GMT.

For 24 hours, we will not post or comment to LJ. Not in our own journals, not in communities. Not publicly, privately, or under friends-lock.

This is a protest that will have long-lasting effects, showing up forever in the daily posting statistics.

This is a protest that will not harm LJ in the long run, as leaving LJ might do.

This is a protest that will demonstrate the power of community, as all users unite to support Basic users and the concept of adfree space.

This is a protest that will educate the new owners that LJ is driven by user-created content.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How Can I Help?

DO post about this in your own LJ.
DO post and comment about it in appropriate communities.
DO remember that it's based on Greenwich Mean Time, which may not be your local time.
DO turn off LoudTwitter and your RSS feeds for 24 hours.

DON'T forget to get permission from community mods before making an off-topic post or comment about the strike.
DON'T be spammy with your posts or comments about the strike.
DON'T forget to turn your LoudTwitter and RSS feeds back on when the strike is over.

Dainty Biscuit was sold to someone else that offered more money, so I won't be having her after all. It figures right after I decided that I really wanted her, she was sold to someone else. Oh well. I'm going to research other Blythes, but really, she is the one I think I want. In the meantime, I can squee over entirely too cute Re-Ment items. A lot of these items remind me of my childhood, since a lot of them are mostly Japanese household things and food. (For those of you that don't know, I'm 25% Japanese and spent about 10 years living with my mother's mom who is Japanese. My mom & grandma speak Japanese to each other. I was surrounded by Japanese culture, language, etc. since I was a little girl. I took Japanese as my foreign language credit in high school.) Also, Re-Ment are tiny miniatures of furniture, food and other things.

You can buy Re-Ment here. There's a flickr group all about Re-Ment here. This person has a pretty awesome collection of them.

P.S. I also found these mini Hello Kitty bento lunches & foods.

[so silly]

There are so many people on my f-list that own a Blythe that I have started wanting one as well. I spied Dainty Biscuit a few months ago and now I have the opportunity to buy her. She's about $150 which is an incredible amount of money. I keep thinking she'd be nice to own and that there's always the possibility of re-selling her, but I don't know what to do. I figure if this much thought is going into it, I shouldn't get her, but then I'm afraid in a few months I'll decide that I want her again. Oh, I waste so many minutes a day pondering the stupid things I should purchase next when I should be buying a bed for myself & other important necessities like a haircut.

Anyways, she's cute and I have till Monday to decide.

It's that tiny umbrella.
[gone]

They're everywhere. Dogs. I never noticed how they seem to consume the world. Suddenly, Rachael Ray is doing a special pet themed show, military men are throwing puppies off of bridges and it just seems so inescapable right now. It's just seeing other dogs reminds me of my dog and how much I miss him and right now it's hard to take it all in and still actually function. I just start thinking about all of the cute things he did and how much I miss him and how I'll never take him on another walk and then the tears come & come & come and then I calm down and get on with it. Life. It's hard. I didn't realize how hard it was going to be. I knew I'd be upset. I didn't think I would wake up Tuesday morning and read all of your supportive and caring comments (thank you!) and just totally lose it and have to call out of work and lie in bed and cry. That's how Dave spent his Spring Break -- holding me while I reminisced about my dog, taking care of me and making sure I was okay. And I am...okay. Kinda. I'm sad and it hurts and it's hard, but I'm okay. And soon I will be able to think of those memories without it hurting so much.

[eddie dog aka gazpacho aka the ed]

(Which inspired me to write this story here.) In fact, she saw him, shopped for groceries, he was still there and then she came home and said, "I found a dog." My mom does these kinds of things all of the time. She is constantly rescuing some stray animal that she has stumbled upon and I'm often her partner in crime. So, I wasn't surprised to be recruited for this job, I just didn't know we'd be taking him home. He was so friendly for a stray. He was letting all of the teenagers that worked at the grocery store pet him and he readily got on my lap when we decided to drive around the close-by neighborhoods in search for his possible brothers and sisters. I named him right then and there, Eddie. But no one recognized him. So we took him home. He stayed with me in the car for awhile, because we needed a leash, food and time to stall, as we had to think of a good way to tell my grandma that we were bringing home yet another pet. (We already had two cats, a giant goldfish and a guinea pig!) I readily welcomed our new dog into our lives, because, strangely, I had been thinking I would love to have a dog, even though I consider myself a cat person. I was going to be a senior in high school and it was Summer of 1999. I had no idea what the future held for me, except that it was certain that I was going to have this Eddie dog.

Now, nine years later, I don't live with Eddie anymore. He's in Texas and I'm in Massachusetts (1791 miles apart) and even though it took me some time to get used to living without him, I still got to see him when I went back for holiday breaks from college, but now, I haven't been home since 2006. I miss him and with the passing of my grandfather last year, I've been thinking more & more about my family, including my pets that I can't see everyday. And each day without them makes me realize how precious time is and if I don't get back soon, I might not be able to see them at all. It's scary to realize that.

My mom called me last night to tell me that Eddie had been to the vet. A routine check-up, but that once he got home he had been throwing up and not eating and had wondered if it was a reaction to a shot that they had given him, but that wasn't the problem. She took him to the Emergency Hospital and was told to give him insulin shots and that possibly he had diabetes, but now, he's not eating and my mom can't give him his shots. He's throwing up again. He's dug a hole in the backyard and he's sleeping in it. My dog is weird and stressed out and I'm just scared what's going to happen next. We're crossing our fingers that he's going to eat tonight. He went to a different vet today and instead of taking another blood sample that might stress him out more and cause more problems, they're just going to wait it out. I think it's the right thing to do. The vet is always a traumatic experience for him. He doesn't like the vet. So, I'm really hoping this is going to blow over and that my Eddie Dog is going to be okay.

[what to do]

I don't know why I can't write here anymore, but for some reason, I bottle up my words and save them inside my ever shrinking mind to write down another time and then the time never ends up coming and then I forget. The forgetting gets to me. I hate forgetting. I wish I could bottle up every single memory in a box and store it there forever. A glass box that I could peek inside every now and again. The pensieve from Harry Potter. I need those memories, these words; I need not forget them.

The truth is that I worry what you think and that I've become boring. Not you or you or you or you. It doesn't really matter in the end. This is an electronic medium that will stick around forever in Google searches and if it ever fades there's always someone around to remember it. There's mirrors and dumps and all these things gathering up my words, thoughts and emotions and 100+ years from now they probably won't be my words anymore. They'll be someone else's stolen from my fingers.

So maybe it's better to keep them inside.

They're doing a new monthly blogging thing on the NaBloPoMo site. There's a new theme each month and March will be lists. I can handle lists. I want to write them. I write them nearly everyday on pieces of scrap paper at work. It's not really scraps, because they get tossed away to disintegrate amongst the other miscellaneous office trash, but I save them and write lists. Lists that I never mark off. I keep meaning to tell you what I've been up to, but sometimes there are too many things to say and I never know how to say them. It's weird. I'm better at writing than talking, but lately, I don't want to write and instead want to talk, but I'm embarrassed by my talking. I sound clumsy and awkward and there isn't a backspace in real life. Because if there was, I'd probably be considered a mute.
